Champion junior weightlifter and former student Max Searby was a special guest at the Academy’s annual Sports Awards.
Head of PE Mrs Pharaoh earlier welcomed students and their families to the evening and introduced Max.
He started at Waltham Toll Bar in 2012 and went on to study in the Sixth Form, excelling in PE from an early age.
He was National Indoor Rowing Champion three times and came third at England’s Strongest Man last year, the youngest person to podium on debut.
He is holder of the World Record for the junior deadlift, a lift of 421kg which is same weight as a grown horse.
Mrs Pharaoh said: “We are delighted to welcome Max back to the Academy and hope he will be an inspiration to our students as they pursue their sporting careers.
“We believe at Waltham Toll Bar that sport has a wonderful way of bringing people together.
“It is important we celebrate the achievements of our students in their participation and their contribution to sport around the community.”
The school attended just under 100 sporting fixtures this academic year and sports leaders have helped at seven events.
Duke of Edinburgh students took part in more than 200 hours of voluntary service as well as residential trips to Ulswater and Condover, to name just a few.
“We are here to celebrate the resilience, fair play, teamwork, and hard work that comes with taking part,” said Mrs Pharaoh.
“It is important to remember that without volunteers we could not play sport, without officials we could not take part, and without support from parents you would not be able to participate.
“Tonight, we will celebrate each and every student achievement and in doing so we recognise the hard work that has gone into that success behind the scenes.”
Principal Mr Whittle told students they should feel very proud of their achievements.
“Sport plays a pivotal role in the Academy,” he said. "I congratulate the winners and everybody else for taking part and representing the school in many competitions over the past year.
“I would like to thank my staff team for the key role they play in encouraging and inspiring you to compete and your parents and carers for their support with your sporting engagements.”
The Victor Ludorum award, presented to the student who as well as being an exceptional performer goes above and beyond expectations, was won by rugby captain Ivan Boyd.
The inaugural Cameron Walsh Team of The Year Memorial Trophy was presented to the Year 8/9 Panathlon Team.
It has represented the Academy in four competitions this year. These include the Xtend event, which they won, as well as Ten Pin Bowling, Boccia, and New Age Kurling, where they qualified for the Humber Schools Finals and were crowned County Champions.
