Students and staff celebrate results

Prestigious destinations and exciting opportunities were realised by Toll Bar Sixth Form students when A-level results were revealed today.

Russell Group and other universities await some while others have secured highly sought-after apprenticeships.

The achievements were celebrated by excited students who came in to collect their results.

Principal Nigel Whittle revealed that the sixth formers achieved a 95% pass rate across all subjects.

"We have had 15 A-level courses achieve a 100% pass rate, a huge credit to our staff and students who have worked so hard over the past two years," he said.

"We're excited about their next steps. The majority who wanted to go into higher education have achieved their first-choice university while others have secured some fantastic apprenticeships and training opportunities with local businesses.

"My congratulations to the students and their families and I wish them good luck in the future."

There were some outstanding results.

Head girl Georgia Baxter is to study Philosophy and Politics at the University of York after achieving A*AA.

"I'm over the moon," she said. "I was expecting good results but you never know.

"I'm so excited about going to York and I'm ready for the next chapter.

"I'm really proud to have been head girl and learn skills I'll be able to take elsewhere. The staff at Toll Bar have been lovely and I will look back with fond memories."

Head boy Will Jones also achieved A*AA and is looking forward to reading History at Durham University.

"I'm really pleased to know all the hard work has paid off," he said. "It's been a brilliant two years here with all the support I've received.

"You can see today that we are all friends. Everyone knows each other and have been so supportive."

Isaac Lonsdale, who recorded three straight As, has chosen the apprenticeship route into his chosen profession of law.

He beat off stiff competition from around the world to land the opportunity with a leading American commercial law firm in London, where he will live, with a starting salary of £27,000.

"It will be the same length of time training as it would have been had I gone down the graduate route and this way I avoid the debt," he said.

"I came here from King Edward's in Louth and have always wanted to be a lawyer. I was exposed to the apprenticeship opportunity while here and am just relieved to be where I need to be."

Neve Nearney, formerly at Humberston Academy, will study Medicine at the University of Sheffield, her first-choice destination.

"I'm really proud," she said. "It has been great here and I'm really looking forward to studying in Sheffield. Long term, I'd like to go into surgery."

Cian Hughes will also move to Sheffield, where he will read Law.

"I'm relieved," he said. "I've been on holiday but this is all I've been thinking about.

"I'd recommend coming here 100%. I was at Waltham Toll Bar which made the transition even easier."

A degree in Veterinary Medicine will be taken by Harry Cropper at the University of Surrey, where he will be based in Guildford.

"It's been a long time waiting for this day and I'm very happy to have got what I needed to go to my first choice," he said.

"I was feeling quite confident, but you just don't know. Guildford is such a nice city and I'm really looking forward to it."

Will Taylor was "feeling good" after achieving AAB, meaning he will study History and Economics at Edinburgh University.

"The grades were maybe a bit more than I was expecting, particularly the A in Maths," he said.

Ruben Parker, with three straight As, will also study Law at the University of Sheffield.

"I was so nervous this morning and I'm relieved," he said. "I'm really excited and I can really focus on the future now.

"The staff and teachers here have given me terrific support."

Head of Sixth Form Christina Hook said: "We are immensely proud of our Year 13 cohort, who demonstrated superb commitment to their studies, and have been rewarded with some fantastic examination results.

"We share in their excitement as they now progress to a fabulous range of future destinations within our local area and beyond.

"This year's results are further testament to the supportive and aspirational environment students benefit from at Toll Bar Sixth Form.

"It goes alongside our commitment to providing all students with a first-class academic experience that will lead to success in whichever field they choose."

Toll Bar Sixth Form is part of Lincolnshire Gateway Academies Trust and its Chief Executive Officer Martin Brown was full of praise.

"I would like to congratulate students on their A-level successes and thank our Sixth Form Team and teaching staff for the support that's been provided," he said.

"There are some wonderful stories of achievement behind the headlines and I wish those leaving the Sixth Form all the best for the future."

LGAT's Chair of the Board of Trustees Philip Bond also passed on his congratulations.

"We're proud of our sixth form and the results it consistently achieves, opening up some wonderful opportunities for our young people," he said.
