- Encourage pupils to explore the universality of the human condition and understand their position within the world they live;
- Empower pupils to think critically, sensitively and thoughtfully;
- Instil a passion for reading diverse and varied texts, developing their independence and love of reading, as well as broadening their vocabulary;
- Engage and inspire pupils to develop an appreciation of writers’ craft;
- Enable pupils to articulate their views and passions in a range of modes, to a variety of audiences confidently;
- Excel in the ability to write articulately, coherently and imaginatively for a range of purposes and audiences;
- Excellence for all pupils including those who are disadvantaged or with SEND;

What is covered in KS2 English?
- Reading easily, fluently and with good understanding
- Developing the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
- Acquiring a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- Appreciating our rich and varied literary heritage
- Writing clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
