Mathematics
Curriculum Leader: Mrs. J Leshone
Aims of our Curriculum:
- Engage and inspire pupils to develop an appreciation of Mathematics and its purpose and importance in the world.
- Enable pupils to articulate their misconceptions and ideas using correct mathematical language and notations, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Empower pupils to develop their thinking and reasoning power, so they can successfully tackle increasingly complex problems (including in context problems they may encounter in adult life), making connections and using a variety of procedures.
- Ensure all pupils understand and remember the mathematical knowledge, concepts, and procedures appropriate for their start points, so they are ready for their next stage, whether that is the next maths lesson, unit of work, year, key stage or post sixteen opportunities.
- Excellence for all pupils particularly those who are disadvantaged or with SEND; we aim for all pupils achieve well in national tests and examinations compared to their peers nationally and are provided with the opportunity to maximise progress compared to their start points.
How we researched our curriculum:
We have considered OFSTED research on the subject and research studies to help us plan our curriculum.
Building on prior learning:
We have considered the requirements of the KS1/2 National Curriculum programme of study to help us plan our curriculum. We have also worked with local primary schools Waltham Leas and Scartho Junior Academy, and our Trust primary schools to ensure we build upon the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in KS1/2.

Embedding Mathematics knowledge through practice at home:
Within our curriculum there are opportunities to revisit previously learned knowledge, concepts, and procedures. However, to maximise success we provide the opportunity for pupils to revisit learning and practice new learning at home. We do this using https://sparxmaths.com/ which personalises home learning for our pupils and helps to develop the practice culture which builds deep knowledge, skills & understanding at Toll Bar Academy. We aim to ensure pupils regularly receive home learning practice that is both achievable and challenging. This means they experience success as well as being stretched by harder questions.
