Invite to Open Evening

Prospective students and their families have an opportunity learn about our academy and meet our new Principal at an Open Evening on Thursday, 17th September.

Students and staff will be on hand to answer any questions during the event, which takes place between 5pm and 7.30pm.

Principal Joe Hermiston will give presentations in the Drama Hall at 5.15pm and 6.30pm and tours will include the impressive facilities.

Mr Hermiston will be accompanied by Executive Principal Philip Dickinson, who has overseen the academy’s turnaround over the last two years.

Mr Hermiston has switched from high-performing Louth Academy to take responsibility for the day-to-day running at Waltham Toll Bar. Both schools are part of Lincolnshire Gateway Academies Trust.

He said: “I am really looking forward to meeting Year 5 and 6 pupils and their families.

“This academy has so much to offer, in and out of the classroom.

“GCSE results improved again during the summer, with more than 50% achieving Maths and English at grade 5 or above, a 4.6% year-on-year increase.

“More than 70% achieved a standard pass (grade 4 or above) in their core subjects.

“English saw the numbers of students reaching a grade 5 or above increase to 66% and Maths went up by 4% to 57%.

“High expectations and an aspirational outlook have long been the ethos and foundations of this school and Trust.

“But we offer so much more than strong academic performance in a fantastic teaching and learning environment.

“We pride ourselves on our inclusivity and have strong pastoral support to ensure young people’s wellbeing is looked after.

“They are encouraged to have a strong connection to the wiser community.

“We offer first class careers advice and guidance, supporting our students to their next steps, while our unparalleled enrichment activities have something for everyone.”

The academy’s size enabled it to offer opportunities not available elsewhere, Mr Hermiston said.

“Our annual production will, for the third successive year, take place at Grimsby Auditorium over two days.

“Following the success of Peter Pan last year, we are excited to be putting on Shrek The Musical.

“Auditions will take place across our year groups this month.

“Across the arts and in sport, we offer unrivalled opportunities for our young people to thrive.”

Visitors will also see the results of an extensive refurbishment this summer.

The near £400,000 investment has included a modern, purpose-built toilet block with 32 toilets, meaning there are plenty for students to use.

English classrooms have been modernised and new flooring in the hall has dramatically improved that space.

Mr Hermiston said pupils in Years 5 and 6 and their families will be given a warm welcome on Thursday, 17th September, between 5pm and 7.30pm.
